Instagram’s new algorithm changes how brands and individuals can increase organic reach and engagement. This will be good news for those of us who have been mourning the loss of the chronological feed, which is making its return. Sort of.
Yet another algorithm change is on the horizon for this popular social media site. But not to worry: this one might actually work out in your favor. This recent change might actually help to increase your organic reach and impressions on Instagram.
In 2016, Instagram made it’s first big shift in how its users engaged with posts by ditching the basic chronological order. Instead, Instagram went the way of the Facebook News Feed by ordering the posts based on engagement. With this change, a person’s feed would show posts that had more likes and comments, rather than posts that were more recent.
Fast forward to 2018 and we’re now seeing Instagram take a step back from that and reverting to a chronological order for the feed. Almost. In their exact words “We’re also making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in [the] feed.” So what does that mean? Instagram is still using their own algorithm to determine what shows up in your feed, except now the newness of content will be weighted much more.
